Most natural stone is ideal for patios, pathways, and garden areas. For driveways, however, it’s essential to choose a stone that’s thick and durable enough to handle vehicle traffic. Certain granites and dense sandstones can work well, but in general, porcelain or concrete setts might be a better choice for driveways.

It depends on the stone and the look you want. Some people choose to seal natural stone to protect it from staining and make cleaning easier. Others prefer to leave it untreated so it weathers naturally. Regular brushing and the occasional clean with a mild detergent usually keep things looking good. Avoid harsh chemicals and pressure washers, especially on softer stones like limestone.

Sandstone is a popular choice for traditional garden settings thanks to its rustic textures and warm, earthy tones. Colours like Autumn Brown, Raj Green or Fossil Mint work well with classic planting schemes and period homes. Tumbled limestone is another great option for a more aged or heritage look.

Each type of natural stone has its own unique look and characteristics. Sandstone often has a warm, riven texture with lots of natural variation, making it ideal for traditional settings. Limestone tends to be smoother and more consistent in colour, with a softer, refined appearance. Slate is typically darker and more contemporary, offering a flatter finish with subtle clefts and striking tonal variation.

Natural stone weathers beautifully. Over time, it develops subtle changes in tone that add to its character and charm. Unlike some man-made paving, it doesn’t fade as quickly and tends to blend more naturally into its surroundings. With the right care, natural paving will last for decades and look even better with age.
